Highbush cranberry is a deciduous shrub growing to 3 - 5 m tall. Leaves are opposite, serrated, and tri-lobed, somewhat resembling those of a maple tree. Plants begin to produce fruit at approximately five years of age, which are eaten by animals and birds. They grow best in wet, acidic soils, often near bogs and swamps.
